Being Empathetic and Being an Empath


It seems in recent times there has been an upsurge in Empaths all over the world. I have read articles and watched many videos of men and women claiming to be an Empath. Yet in the next breath lack the depth of compassion. There is a difference between being an Empath and being able to empathize with others. There is a difference between being able to read energy verses having the wisdom and understanding of the energy.


I have been hypersensitive to energy for as long as I can remember. I could always tell when someone was scared, stressed, or lonely. For me, it didn't stop there. For me, I always knew what to do about it or did the best I could to help.


Having the ability to empathize with someone is a beautiful gift. It means you are willing to relive your experience in aid to someone else. To look into another person's eyes with knowing and understanding of the emotions they are feeling. Empathy comes from experience and with that brings compassion.


Being energetically sensitive comes from surviving difficult times. You have become hyperaware of the frequency of different emotional state. While this ability is helpful to keep us safe, this by itself does not make you an Empath. Don't get me wrong, your developing gifts are important. As you move along your healing journey you will learn how to use it for your best self.


A true Empath tends to need A LOT of alone time. They need to limit their time out in public or in large groups. Most of the time Empaths are introverted and enjoy their isolation. Thier careers or jobs will require very little interaction with others. Empaths on occasion can and will be very extroverted when they have had enough alone time. However, to much 'peopling' as I call it, and they will quickly burn out and retreat into isolation.


Why does this happen? The truth is that a true Empath absorbs the energy around them like a human crystal. When I spend too much time around someone is hurting in any way I will begin to develop the same hurt as I absorb their pain without having their condition. At the same time, I also can change the energy in a room and around me when my energy is cleared. The hardest part of activating this ability is keeping yourself balanced.


Here is my suggestion to my fellow sensitives and empaths:

  1. wear or carry some sort of protection/grounding stones. My person favorite is Labradorite.

  2. Sage your house and yourself regularly. Energies that we come in contact with leaves a residue.

  3. Find time to get out in nature. If, like me, you have limited access, I find nature sound to stream on my music app or YouTube.
